Sky High

The ceiling had to be ripped out in the kitchen, both the crazy low ceiling the previous owners had put in, along with the original higher ceiling.  When the contractor did that, you could see all the way into the attic and through the vent for the roof fan.

A Minor Breakthrough

These windows are the only way into our attic.  You have to use a ladder to get up on the porch roof to get to them.  We'd like to change that.

We had an architect come by to look at the space to make sure it's feasible to put the number of bedrooms we want up there.

There's plywood on the joists so you can walk around, but it's not everywhere.  He managed to find one of the open spots.

It was like something out of a slapstick routine.  I was just sitting in the living room working when there was a thud.  When I went to check it out, there was a leg sticking through the ceiling.

Thankfully, he wasn't hurt, and the way I see it, we got a jump start on the demolition for putting in the staircase.

Halfway Ghetto

We plan to expand into the attic in a few years, and we aren't sure exactly what will happen with this pop out. No point in paying outrageously for a new window if we're only going to have to take it out.

So the rotting wood, and the fact we ran out of shingles before the pop out was completely covered (not visible in this pic) means we're going to be ghetto even longer than hoped.

Seeing Things From A Different Perspective

With the old siding off the house, we can see the built-in in our dining room from the outside of the house.

The second shot is a view from the attic, with all the debris that have fallen on it as various things have been demolished.

I think it's pretty funny that I have pictures of this built-in from every angle except the one we look at every day!

The Light At The End of the Tunnel

We went up into the attic with our designer to start thinking about putting bedrooms up there.

This shot is from the attic, through where the fireplace used to be down to the new basement.
