Harvest

I thought the tomatoes would be done by now, but I managed to harvest half a basket yesterday.  We had some with burrata for lunch yesterday and the rest went to the sauce for tonight's lasagne.   I'll probably get one more basket before the weekend.

There are these weird orange critters on the plants.  I thought they were eggs of some sort, but today Anne from the HaFoSaFo blog explained they're spider mites.  Yuck!  I'll be clipping them out of the remaining plants this week.  Sigh, the joys of gardening.

It's Just the Cutest Little Cantaloupe EVER!

We have had a lot of volunteers in the garden, many of them melons.

The cantaloupes are SO tiny.  They're ripening on the vine to sweet perfection.  Can't wait to get some prosciutto to go with these.  Yum.

Let Us Have Lettuce

When the lettuce in my clay pots went to seed, some of it sprouted in the yard.

This volunteer is doing better than the stuff I actually planted in my raised bed!

Winter Crops

Well, the tomatoes ripened.

Going to throw them on a pizza to see how they are.

LAJen was the only one who took me up on betting when they would ripen, so I guess she is the winner! (And she was only a week off.)

Grave Matters

We put a raised bed in the front yard and edged it with bricks from the old fireplace. All it needs is a tombstone.

I've planted a bunch of winter vegetables -- garlic, onions, broccoli, etc.

We didn't have enough of our own compost, so I bought some at Home Despot. It wasn't broken down all the way -- there were big clumps of animal hair in it. Lovely.

Unseasonably Large

We've had a heat spell which has resulted in our watermelon and volunteer cantaloupe fruiting again. I'm taking bets on whether the baby watermelon at the left can grow to be as big as the 45 pounder Rob is holding.

We get A LOT of comments from the neighbors on the watermelon and we've been sharing as much as possible. Still, trying to unload over 120 pounds of watermelon is a bit of a chore, and I've eaten more than I care to think about...

Chipping Away

Rob has been pulling bricks out of the trash heap in the driveway and chipping off the mortar. This is what he has done so far. I plan to use these to make raised beds for vegetables in the spring.
